Recycling in Northwest Iowa

Waste Management is becoming a very critical situation nationwide. People can separate six kinds of material are plastic, glass, paper, cardboard, tin cans and aluminum foil containers. Please keep the recycling material clean and dry! Don't mix garbage with your recycled material.

Recyclable

Non-Recyclable

Plastics

The two basic varieties of plastic that are being recycled are clear and colored. This includes milk jugs, dishwashing liquid bottles, laundry bottles, shampoo bottles, antifreeze jugs and any container that holds a liquid (numbered 1 and 2). [Pretty much, if you can crush it, you can recycle it.] Styrofoam, saran wrap®, bread wrappers, shopping bags,, fast food containers, rigid plastics, laundry bags and disposable diapers. Plastic shopping bags should be returned to the store where purchased or disposed of in the garbage.

Glass

Currently the recycling center will NOT recycle glass. All Glass is now NON-RECYCLABLE.

Paper (and Cardboard)

Newsprint, computer, white ledger, brown paper shopping bags and corrugated cardboard are acceptable. Corrugated cardboard boxes may be folded into one by two foot sections. The cardboard and newsprint can be boxed, bundled or bagged in paper bags (not plastic bags) Waxed paper, waxed cardboard, advertising, magazines with glossy paper, envelopes with gum address labels or plastic windows, shoe boxes, cereal boxes, toilet paper, pop and beer boxes are not recyclable.

Tin Cans

Any tin container should be separated from the regular garbage. These containers should be rinsed and cleaned as much as possible. Please take the labels off. Aerosol cans and paint cans.

Aluminum Foil Containers

Medical Wastes

Disposable foil containers, such as foil wrap, foil pie plates, aluminum pans, lasagne trays and foil TV dinner trays are acceptable. Please rinse and clean the containers and then crumple them. Should not be disposed of either by recycling or in the regular garbage. This includes infectious wastes, used band aids, dressings, needles, syringes, or other items contaminated with blood or other fluids.

Special Solid Waste Items

Tires: Can be brought to the landfill, but are to be disposed of on the tire pile only. There is a charge for disposal. As of May, 2001 the charges are listed below, but the landfill may change those without notice. If cost is an issue, please call ahead at (712) 324-4026

Type of tire Charge
Car $1.50
Truck $4.00
Tractor $15.00
Large equipment $50.00

Used Oil: can be disposed of at a tank located at the landfill or at many of the local gas stations.

Lead Acid Batteries: The landfill has a separate area for the storage of lead acid (car) batteries. You can also ask the retailer to dispose of these very toxic and environmentally harmful items. This would also include most of the new "rechargeable" Nickel or NiCa batteries used in cordless tools or electronics. There also contain very high levels of heavy metals very harmful to the environment. [If you don't do anything else, please act responsibly when disposing of these products. They are bad ones!

Concrete: can be dumped south of the tree pile if it is clean.

Metals - Ferrous and nonferrous: Iron, tin, white goods and wire can be taken to scrap metal dealers in this area. The landfill will take these items but they are kept separate from regular garbage.

Pesticide Containers: need to be "pressure rinsed" or punctured triple rinsed. These can be brought to the landfill or returned to the business where purchased.

Paints: The landfill will not take liquid paints. Donate excess paint to a neighbor or pour it on a plastic sheet or cardboard to dry. The dry paint is put in the garbage safely and the container can be recycled if cleaned.

Household Chemicals: are not disposed of by the landfill. If you have extra, give the remainder to a friend or neighbor. Once the container is empty, it can be disposed of in the garbage.

Yard Waste: is not taken at the landfill. The City of Hawarden has a grass, leave and limb drop off where local residents will be able to dispose of unwanted lawn clippings, tree limbs and leaves. It is located on Ave. D. and 12th. If you have questions, please contact the city.
