The City of Hawarden Natural Gas Utility received notice of a significant spike in gas pricing beginning December 29 thru January 9. Northern Natural Gas had a compressor station fail on a large volume pipe coming in from Canada. This caused a pressure drop on the system during record cold temperatures. They then started bringing gas in from the south, which caused another problem, these wellheads began to freeze shut due to the extreme cold extending to this area. Gas then had to be brought in from suppliers that charged over 10 times our average rate for this period. This caused a “Critical Day” to be declared on the system. Our supplier has not seen a stress on the system like this in 29 years. We will be working with our customers to manage the increased costs.
