Storm Watchers Course Offered

Storm Watch Course

A Four County Family Tornado and Weather Safety Seminar will be held at Northwest Iowa Community College Room 119, Building A in Sheldon, Iowa. The date and times for this class for all of Sioux County is April 2, 2002 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. #222925 and the second session is 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. #222929. You need only to attend one of these sessions. There is no registration fee for this training, however, advance registration is required. Please call 1-800-352-4907 to pre-register.

TORNADO WATCH

Conditions are favorable for a Tornado

When there is a tornado watch issued by the National Weather Service an alert siren WILL NOT be blown.

CITIZENS SHOULD FOLLOW THESE PROCEDURES:

  1. Protect personal property
  2. Prepare emergency lighting
  3. Be ready to take personal shelter.
  4. Tune into a television or radio station that provides Sioux County's weather

TORNADO WARNING

Tornado actually sighted, which threatens our city.

When there is a tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service an alert siren WILL be blown.

Signal: Straight blasts for 3 to 5 minutes.

CITIZENS SHOULD FOLLOW THESE PROCEDURES:

  1. Take immediate shelter
  2. DO NOT go outside or look out of windows.

NO "ALL CLEAR" SIGNAL WILL BE GIVEN.

Safety Equipment Available

Smoke, Carbon Monoxide Detectors and Fire Escape Ladders Available

If you signed up for a free smoke detector and/or a fire escape ladder you can stop by the Hawarden City Offices and pick them up. There is a waver that needs to be filled out before the merchandise can be received and they will be available at the time of pick up. If you are unable to pick them up, please call Brad at 551-4406 and make arrangement for delivery and instillation.

The Sirens will go off the first Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. from April through September.

Activities Update

Upcoming Community Events

Swimming Trip: A swimming trip to the Sioux Center Indoor pool is planned for Friday, March 15th. The trip is open to all West Sioux students in grades 2nd ö 8th. The cost will be $3.00 per student. This includes two hours of swimming and the bus ride. Registration deadline is March 12th.

Babysitting Class: This class will be held Saturday, March 23rd from 9:00 am ö 3:00 pm at the High School Library. All 4th ö 8th grade students are welcome. The cost is $10.00. This class is sponsored by the City of Hawarden and Floyd Valley Hospital. Contact Jami by Thursday, March 14th to register.

Final Youth Bowling League of the Season: Sportsmanâs Lanes is offering a four-week youth bowling league for students beginning March 11th & 12th. Grades 2nd & 3rd are scheduled for Tuesdays and grades 4th ö 8th are scheduled for Mondays from 3:30 ö 5:00 p.m. The cost of the league is $10.00. The last night of league we will be having a party with music, free food and prizes. Sportsmanâs Lanes will be giving away two free bowling balls.

  • Cost: $5.00 per child (The cost will be $8.00 after March 27th)
  • Where: West Sioux High School Soccer Fields.

Reminder: Without volunteer coaches/parents we can't have a soccer league. Please volunteer and get involved with your kids. Registration Deadline is March 27th. Forms can be picked up at school offices or at the Hawarden City offices.

Flag Football

  • Who: Youth Boys in grades 4, 5, & 6
  • Cost: $10.00 per student
  • When: Monday Nights from 5:30 ö 7:00 p.m.
  • Date: April 15th through May 20th
  • Where: West Sioux High School Football Scrimmage Field

Footballs and flags will be provided.

Registration deadline is April 2nd.

This is the second year flag football is being offered in Hawarden and we need your help. As a parent I hope you see this program as an opportunity for our future football program to improve. Please step up as a parent and/or community member and volunteer as a coach.
