Fire Department to Distribute FREE Safety Equipment |
Free Safety Equipment for Your HomeThatÕs right, free safety equipment for your home. The Hawarden Fire Department in conjunction with the City of Hawarden are offering free smoke detectors, free carbon monoxide detectors, and free emergency escape ladders to all residences in the Hawarden Fire District (City and County). As part of our ongoing efforts to make our community safer we have tried to think of what we could further due to save lives. As a community we have bought fire fighting vehicles and equipment and have trained hard so we can fight fires. Last year, we bought an infrared camera to further enhance this capability. However, no matter how much equipment or training we have to fight fires, there are critical minutes prior to the fire department arrival that can mean the difference between life and death. In many homes, we have noticed that they still lack these life saving devices. As result of this observation, we are now seeking to close this critical gap in our public safety protection through this program. This month and the next two months you will find additional brochures in your utility bills explaining the importance of these life saving devices. In order to qualify for the free safety equipment all you have to do is ask for it. You simply call 551-2565, come by City Offices, or tell a fire fighter to put you on the list. Once you are on the list a firefighter will evaluate your home for potential locations for these life saving measures or you can evaluate your home yourself by using the general location guidelines below to tell us what equipment is needed. If you can install it yourself we will provide the equipment to you and come back later to check the installation. If you canÕt install the equipment yourself, we will install it for you. We can accommodate over 250 homes in the fire district (Hawarden, Chatsworth, County). Please call us if you lack any of these devices in your home, especially if you only have one exit, have children, are less mobile, or if you have multiple stories. We donÕt care about the condition or cleanliness of your house, only about the safety of you and your family. Tenants and landlords are welcome to call also. If you donÕt have a need yourself but know of someone that does, you can recommend a friend or parent for us to contact also. There wonÕt be another program like this in the future, especially not for free. On Wednesday, January 2, 2002 the Hawarden Fire Department will be going door-to-door to seek homes that need this equipment. Please welcome them into to your home and help them evaluate your safety needs. Minimum Safety Equipment Needs:

Winter Parking Ordinance Reminder |
Winter Parking Restrictions ReminderWith the change of seasons upon us, the Hawarden Police Department would like to remind the citizens of Hawarden of the winter parking rules. The Hawarden Municipal Code states Òno person shall park, abandon, or leave unattended any vehicle on any public street, alley, or city-owned off street parking area through the duration of any snowfall, snowstorm or ice storm, and the twelve hour period after the cessations of the same, except upon streets which have been fully opened.Ó The reason this is in effect is so the city crews can clean all of the streets without any vehicles obstructing the streets. Failure to remove vehicles from the streets will result in a parking ticket being issued to the vehicle owner with a fine of $10.00. There is also the possibility of the vehicle being towed at the ownerÕs expense. The Hawarden Police Department recommends that all vehicle owners make plans early on where they will park their vehicles so there is not a problem at the last minute. The vehicles can be parked back on the roadway only if the street is cleared from curb to curb. If there is an emergency and the vehicle cannot possibly be moved, the owner should contact the police department so we can make appropriate arrangements. |
Automatic Payment Options for Utilities and Phone/Cable Bills |
(AUTOMATIC PAYMENT PLAN) LIFE MAY HAVE JUST GOTTEN EASIER!!Are you sick of writing checks, not having a stamp, or do not want to fight the winter weather to pay bills? If so, you may be interested in our Automatic Payment Plan. The Automatic Payment Plan allows you to have your monthly utility and/or cable/telephone bill automatically deducted from your bank account. We will continue to send you a copy of your utility or cable/telephone bill(s), but it will indicate ÒPaid at BankÓ. The billing will be deducted from your account 10 days after the billing date on the statement and will appear on your monthly statement from your financial institution. If you are on the level payment plan (budget-billing), you may want to consider using the automatic payment plan to make your monthly payment. If you are interested, simply complete the Automatic Payment Plan Authorization Agreement below. Here is a page to explain the program. You can download the form - print it from home and drop it off at the city offices. My advise is to Right Click (PC) or Control Click (MAC) and select download link to disk. You can then open it with Acrobat by double clicking on the file. It will open in the browser, but that has been known to crash your browser sometimes. [Note, this form requires Adobe Acrobat.] |
Carbon Monxide Facts |
Carbon Monoxide DetectorsAre they necessary? Everything you read these days talks about carbon monoxide and the dangers associated with it. How serious can it be? And what should I look out for? Hopefully, the following article will help answer some of those questions. Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, highly toxic gas that is produced by incomplete combustion. It is important to know that carbon monoxide is deadly from the toxicity standpoint long before it reaches the combustible range. Carbon Monoxide comes from appliances that consume coal, oil, wood, propane gas, natural gas, and other hydrocarbon based fuels. It is absorbed by the hemoglobin of the blood cells and replaced the oxygen of the red blood cells that you body needs. When carbon monoxide replaces enough oxygen, your body begins to suffocate from the inside- out and may cause brain damage, coma and/or death. The carbon monoxide concentrations and the effects from the concentrations vary from different levels of carbon monoxide and the exposure time. If you feel you have carbon monoxide in your building, you can call your local plumber or the city to test your home for carbon monoxide. *The carbon monoxide concentrations and the effects listed are only a guideline. Effects can vary significantly based on age, weight and overall state of health. [Web Viewers can find more information on Carbon Monoxide from Carbon Monoxide Kills, Carbon Monoxide Poisoning and a good EPA document. Click on the above links to visit these sites. The site will open in a new window. You can return here by closing the front window after you are done. Webmaster] |
Gas Leak Information |
Good Information about Gas LeaksNatural Gas is an odorless and colorless gas. The City Gas Department adds odorant into the system so that leaks can be detected. Here are a few natural gas safety tips: Always operate gas appliances in accordance with manufacturers recommendations. If you suspect a leak, call the Hawarden Municipal Gas Department at 551-2565 for aid. If you smell gas, avoid flame and operation of electric switches or appliances. If odor is extremely strong, evacuate the building and call for help from another location. Insure that only a qualified person turns gas back on and relights appliances. Be aware of symptoms or illness from inadequate air supply. They include: headaches, ringing in the ears, vomiting, fluttering or throbbing heart. These symptoms could mean a problem with chimney exhaust, also. If you suspect an exhaust problem, get fresh air, shut off the gas, and have the problem checked by an expert. If you have a gas smell at your residence, contact the City offices and they will send the gas department to check out the problem, free of charge. After hours, you can call Brent Hamilton, Gas Dept. foreman at 551-1357 or Brian Warner, Gas Dept. Asst. at 551-2179. In an emergency, you can call the Hawarden Hospital at 551-3100 and they will contact the city personnel for you. |
Child Safety Seat Inspections |
Child Safety SeatsMotor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of unintentional deaths among children ages 14 and under. With impending winter driving conditions, icy road and snow can make travel even more hazardous. The single most effective way to protect children in the even of a crash is to ensure that all children are buckled up in an age appropriate system on every trip. The Hawarden Police Department would like to remind all residents that with the changing of the seasons and with winter right around the corner, now would be a great time to have your child safety seat inspected. Your seat will be checked for any recalls, checked for proper installation, and will be checked to insure the seat properly fits your child. To have your seat checked, all you have to do is call the Hawarden Police Department at 551-4430 to make arrangements. The Police Department has certified child seat inspectors on hand that will be glad to assist you. This service is free of charge. We recommend that when you bring your seat to be checked out, it be installed in your car and the child that rides in that particular seat be present. This is to insure that a proper fit can be fitted with the child. |
