A final Thank You from United Good Neighbors, Inc. |
A final Thank You from United Good Neighbors, Inc.A heartfelt thanks to all who have supported the UGN, Inc. for many years. Records date back to December 10, 1963 when it was organized and April 26, 1965 when it was Incorporated with the State of Iowa. By-laws were set up and at that time, there were 24 board members. Today there are only 8 board members. A special word of appreciation to the Farmers State Bank and the First State Bank for their help with collections and to the City of Hawarden for the help with publicity. We regret to inform the public that the United Good Neighbors, Inc. has been dissolved as of June 26, 2001. This was done with the help of legal advice. The difficulty in obtaining workers to carry out the drive and disappointed monetary response makes this necessary. Our annual goal has not been met for several years. Fifteen health and welfare projects can not be supported without funds. All important records and information will be kept for five years. Again, we thank all who have supported the United Good Neighbors for many years. Signed by Board Members: Jeannette Jager, Pres |

EMT-B classes this Fall |
The Hawarden Ambulance Needs Your HelpJust as the organization above was faced with declining support over the years our ambulance service faces a similar problem. This life saving service depends on volunteers willing to offer a week and/or a weekend during each month to ensure 24 hr on-call coverage for our community. Unfortunately, the number of volunteers is again beginning to reach a critical level that threatens our ability to provide this service. We desperately need volunteers. There are several ways you can volunteer. You could seek to become a driver, First Responder, or EMT (Emergency Medical Technician).
Any of this training may help you save a loved one and are an excellent addition to a resume, not to mention the feeling you'll get when help someone in need. Additionally, you will receive at least $20 per run and for EMT-B's we will offer a $500 sign-on bonus (payable upon completion of training and) after 1 year of service on the squad as an EMT. Below are a list of upcoming classes that are being offered by Northwest Iowa Community College. The Hawarden Ambulance will pay for all costs involved with this program in return for a 1 year commitment on the ambulance. Anyone interested in taking the classes and/or joining the Hawarden Ambulance Squad are encouraged to contact Brad at the City Offices by calling 712-551-4406.

Municipal Utilities Take Advantage of Clean Energy Opportunities |
Municipal Utilities Take Advantage of Clean Energy OpportunitiesThereÕs a lot of talk these days about our environment and using clean resources for generating electricity. When it comes to clean energy, you can be assured your hometown municipal utility has an outstanding and proven environmental record. Nearly 60 percent of Hawarden Municipal Utilities electricity supply comes from hydropower- a clean, reliable and low-cost source of energy to electric customers in Hawarden. Hawarden Municipal Utilities has relied on hydropower for more than 30 years. The hydroelectric facilities, operated by the federal government and located along the Missouri River, produce clean, renewable electricity through the force of falling water. The Laramie River Station (LRS), a coal-fired power plant operating since 1980, meets the rest of HawardenÕs electrical needs. Located near Wheatland, Wyo., LRS is recognized as one of the most highly efficient, cleanest-operating, low-cost electric generating stations of its kind in the nation. The power plantÕs environmental standards are six time more stringent that the federal governmentÕs emissions standards. LRS consistently ranks among the five lowest-cost producers of electricity when compared to the 400 other coal-fired power plants in the United States. A very hot topic in Washington, D.C., and our state legislature is environmental improvements and producing energy from alternated resources. Our customers can be proud that weÕve committed to the environment by tapping into clean, renewable resources for a long time. WeÕre working with our power supplier, Missouri River Energy Services, to do even more as our energy needs grow. Hawarden Municipal Utilities and Missouri River Energy Services are leaders in offering Hawarden citizens and businesses a power supply program with an environmental record that is among the best in the country. WhatÕs even more remarkable is that weÕre providing that clean energy with some of the lowest-priced electricity around. |

After Hour Emergency Services Numbers |
After Hour Emergency Services NumbersMother nature has a tendency to create havoc when the city offices are not open. So the City has decided to put the department personnelÕs phone numbers in this issue so we can pin point emergency power, gas, and street emergencies immediately. Please post these numbers somewhere handy and only call these city employees if it is an emergency and it is after the cityÕs normal business hours, 7:30 am - 4:30 pm M-F. Thank you, City of Hawarden Employees
