Beware Of Some Foreign Telephone Calls

Be extra careful before dialing an unrecognized area code!

HITEC NEWS

by Tom Sedgwick, Asst. City Admin/Telecommunications Director

Unscrupulous long distance telephone ÒcompaniesÓ are tricking many consumers into dialing phone numbers, which are actually in foreign countries. A number of foreign countries have a Ò1Ó access number (just like regular long distance in the U.S. and Canada). So called Òemployment opportunitiesÓ or Òwant adsÓ have been published in newspapers with a phone number in a foreign country. Ads may promise information and entertainment services ranging from physic readings to chat lines. Many of these numbers are actually costly international Òpay-per-callÓ numbers where a portion of your international long distance charge goes to pay for the information or entertainment you receive over the phone. Countries that have lax laws or corruption problems attract these unscrupulous con artists who are able to make profit sharing deals with foreign phone companies. Other reported methods of tricking consumers are to place calls to consumers answering machines with messages pretending to be in regards to a Òfamily emergencyÓ and giving a phone number in a foreign country. When the unwitting victims call, they are placed on hold to extend the length of the call and thus driving up the very expensive phone charge. Phone charges have been reported to be as high as $25.00 per minute.

Do you know where you are calling?
ItÕs not always easy to tell if you are calling an international telephone number. In most cases, you have to dial Ò011Ó to begin your call to a foreign country. However, many countries in the Caribbean region require just the Ò1Ó plus area code to place the call. Below is the latest list of foreign country area codes that use only the Ò1Ó access number similar to a domestic call:

New Phone Cards

New calling cards for HITEC customers will be issued sometime in April. We are excited about the issuance of these cards because service will be greatly improved over the previous calling card. Customer service will be available by calling a toll free number printed on the back of the card. A new pin number will be issued with each card for customer protection. The long distance rate for the card will be the same as the option you have chosen for your home HITEC telephone long distance service. Long distance calling card charges will appear on your monthly HITEC statement.

Customers that have HITEC local service but do not have HITEC long distance service will also be able to obtain and use the new calling card. Those customers that want a calling card issued to them must contact customer service at the Hawarden City Office.

New Cable Channels

HITEC cable is pleased to announce the addition of two new channels to the HITEC basic cable lineup. Home Shopping Network will appear on channel 48 and National Geographic will appear on channel 57. These two channels will be added without any additional cost to our customers. The total number of channels offered after the addition will be: local tier - 12, basic tier - 48, and premium channels - 6 (HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime package.) A comparison of surrounding communities with cable television confirms HITEC offers more channels at a lower cost.

The Weather Channel, which is currently on channel 48, will be moved to channel 49. Channel guides can be picked up at the city office and will be free of charge. The guide will also be included in the monthly bill immediately following the launch of the two new channels.

UTILITY NEWS

It is very important that we get your correct meter readings every month. Please send or bring in your cards with the readings or make arrangements for our meter reader to get into your home or place of business to read the meters. If we have to estimate your readings, we will utilize those readings to produce your bill. We simply donÕt have the manpower to refigure all of the readings submitted late, should you have a discrepancy. This can cause your bill to be higher or lower depending on the difference. Thank you.

Hawarden Fire Receives Thermal Imaging Camera

The Hawarden Fire Department has purchased and received their new Thermal Imaging Camera. This piece of equipment, purchased for $17,000, has been a project of the Hawarden City Council and City Administrator Craig Coffey for the past year. This camera allows firefighters the ability to scan the outside of a structure fire to look for Òhot spotsÓ while still at a safe distance. Once inside the building, the camera enhances the vision of the firefighters and makes it easier to find people and property through thick, black smoke and fire. The Fire Department members have attended many camera demonstrations for the past 6 months and were impressed with the picture quality and usefulness of the Scott Thermal Imaging Camera. The camera is not limited to use in Firefighting alone. It can also be used to help look for victims of vehicle accidents who may have wandered into cornfields or may be lying in the surrounding area of the accident. The camera will be able to pick up the heat source of the patient and cut down the time it takes to find the victim. This new piece of equipment in the Hawarden Fire Department arsenal will help the community stay safer, as well as, help keep our valuable volunteer force of firefighters safer in their perilous duties.
