| The Hawarden Ambulance is looking for people who would like to help out on the Ambulance, but don't want to go through the long EMT-B course. We have joined with Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon to bring a First Responders course to Hawarden. The First Responders course is only 54 hours plus National Registry testing (2 nights a week for 8 weeks). We are also looking at having a 4 hour morning class during the "MayTerm" for Juniors and Seniors at West Sioux High School for those that are at least 17 year old and interested. Community members will be allowed to attend the morning classes also, if it will work into their schedule instead of the night classes. The class is normally $189.00 plus a $20 testing fee. If you join the Hawarden Ambulance, we will pay for class. We only ask that you volunteer a few hours a month. For those that are not familiar with First Responders, they are only a few short steps from becoming Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B's). The major difference between First Responders and EMT-B's is that EMT-B's can put Cervical Collars (C-Collars) on and can properly administer Full Spinal Immobilization.
First Responders can perform CPR, administer oxygen, help with child birth, defibrillate a patient having a heart attack, recognize and treat life threatening injuries, and use advanced airway management techniques. First Responders are very knowledgeable in the EMS field and can use these skills no matter where they are. We need your help. We need people to volunteer. If you have ever thought "I could do that", then you can! ! Night classes are being scheduled from 5:30p - 9:00p, February 1st through March 29, 2001 on Monday and Thursday nights at the West Sioux High School. The morning classes are currently being planned for the May Term at the West Sioux High School for ages 17 and above, including community members. You only need to attend one set of these classes. I am breaking them up into morning and night classes to allow a more people to fit it into their schedules. If one of these schedules works better for you, then please let me know at 551-4406.
