Hawarden Police Chief Position


The City of Hawarden, (population estimated at 2500) is seeking candidates for the position of Chief of Police. Hawarden is located in the Northwest corner of Iowa in Sioux County. The Hawarden Police Department is a 4 full-time officer department and also utilizes part-time and Reserve Officers. The Hawarden Police Department also provides police protection to the neighboring City of Ireton, (population estimate 600).

The police chief is appointed by the mayor and works under the general direction of the city administrator, but exercises significant independent judgement and initiative. The city is seeking a proven law enforcement leader that can work collaboratively with other city department heads to realize the goals of the City Council.

The successful candidate must have strong management and leadership skills. Must have a minimum of seven (7) years of experience in law enforcement, three (3) of which must have been equivalent to police sergeant or higher.

The Police Chief is an FSLA exempt position. Salary is negotiable and dependent on candidate’s experience and past job history. Benefits are paid vacation, sick leave, personal leave, holiday leave, health and life insurance, and a clothing allowance. This position includes participation in the IPERS retirement system.

Residence within the corporate limits of the City of Hawarden is required with in six (6) months of employment.

Candidates must meet the licensing standards established by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy www.state.ia.us/ilea. The successful candidate must pass a physical examination, psychological examination and a drug screen.
