For HiTec to provide all the services necessary, we needed help. We needed long distance access, operator assistance, switching help and local calling options. We needed billing and legal help. We need ongoing support and help with the day to day problems of a start-up telephone company.

These concerns were addressed by joining with Pioneer Holdings, Ltd. of South Sioux City, Nebraska, a group of telecommunication companies with the vision of providing state of the art telecommunications to rural Iowa.

Pioneer Holdings, Ltd., founded by 3 key players

This group was formed to encourage and partner with new communications systems in Northwest Iowa. These companies were encouraged by the prospect of local phone companies providing service to communities too small to be profitable to the larger phone monopolies.

MCI/WorldCom provides the long-distance service to Pioneer Holdings, Ltd. Through Pioneer Holdings, MCI/WorldCom will make its entry into the local phone service industry, as allowed by recent federal rulings.

Northwest Iowa Power Cooperative (NIPCO) has a 24-fiber cable network installed throughout its service area that it uses to monitor its substations. Because NIPCO only uses 4 of the 24 fibers, it was looking for ways to use or sell the use of the remaining 20 fibers. Pioneer Holdings will lease the use of some of those fibers for its telecommunications needs.

Long Lines Ltd. has been in the local telephone business for many years. In addition to providing local service expertise and support, Long Lines owns and operates the switch that will connect local phone companies to the rest of the world.

Pioneer Holdings buys and sells communications services (long distance service, switching services, etc.) to and from other organizations including private communication companies and municipalities.

With the telephone system up and running, Hawarden is again in the forefront with new methods of delivering high bandwidth data transfers to accommodate the next generation of business needs: High Speed Internet. Our partners in this endeavor include ACSNet, (Hawarden's local internet provider) and Tellabs, who are designing and constructing a new line of information transfer capabilities. Together, Tellabs, ACSNet and Hawarden will be one of the first communication utilities in the country to provide end users; business, industry, and our residential customers with a complete compliment of telephone, television, data transfer and internet access over a single wire. Clearly Hawarden and it's data transfer partners are leading the way with integrated high speed (high bandwidth) capabilities.
