
CITY OF HAWARDEN
The Council Meeting was called to order at 5:31 p.m.
Present: Mayor Porter; Council Members Jacobs, Hedden, Cauwels, Borchers, Anderson. Absent: None
Staff Present: Jason Metten, City Administrator/City Clerk; Jim Pickner, City Attorney; Tom Kane, Public Works Director; Sharole Rens, Finance Director; Chris Myres, Economic Development Director.Staff Absent: Mike DeBruin, Police Chief
1a. Approval of September 27, 2006 Council Meeting Minutes. Moved by Cauwels/Borchers to approve the minutes of September 27, 2006 meeting. Motion carried unanimously.
1b. Approval of Claims for Payment. Moved by Jacobs/Hedden to approve the Schedule of Claims for payment. Motion carried unanimously.
1c. Open business from the Community (limited to a maximum of 5 minutes per item). None.
2a. Mayor's Report. Mayor Porter congratulated Chris and Amy Myres on the birth of their son Finnegan Myres. He thanked the city staff for coordinating the community walk on the new recreation trails. He read a letter from West Sioux Community Schools thanking the City for the assistance and support with various projects. He also encouraged everyone to attend the strategic planning session on Thursday, October 19th at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.
2b. Council Comments. Council Members Borchers and Anderson attended the Annual Iowa League of Cities Conference and reported on the sessions and workshops held at the meeting.
2c. Staff Reports/Discussion. City Administrator Jason Metten reported on the planned Strategic Planning Meeting and thanked the Independent/Examiner for donating the ad in the newspaper. He and Council Member Hedden attended the Missouri River Services Meeting and he reported on the meeting. He also reported that the City has secured title to the house behind the new Street Department Building and the house will be demolished soon. He gave an update on the new Dental Facility, and reported that work will be starting by the end of the week, weather permitting. Public Works Director Tom Kane reported that the City is taking applications for the Utility Person position, and applications will be taken until the position is filled. He also reminded citizens that the heating season has started and urged everyone to check their furnace, change filters, consider set back thermostats and carbon monoxide detectors.
Mayor Porter welcomed Pat McElroy, Vice President of Business Development for Long Lines, Inc. who presented the City of Hawarden a $25,000 check for the Heart of Hawarden Project. Mayor Porter accepted the gift and thanked Long Lines for their support.
3. Presentation and Discussion by Mike Varian, Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of V.I.P. International on the current status of the Hawarden office. Mike Varian from V.I.P. International gave an update on the company and their plans for the Hawarden Office, and also answered questions from the Mayor, Council, and City Staff.
4. a. Public Hearing on Disposition of Property (Parcel “D” vacated Block 6 of Hawarden’s South Addition). Public Hearing Opened at 6:07 p.m. No written or oral comments had been received and there were no comments at the Public Hearing. Public Hearing Closed at 6:08 p.m.
b. Resolution 2006-62 – Authorizing the Final Disposition of Real Estate (Parcel “D” vacated Block 6 of Hawarden’s South Addition). Moved by Jacobs/Cauwels to approve Resolution 2006-61. Aye: Borchers, Cauwels, Hedden, Anderson, Jacobs. Nay: None. Motion carried unanimously.
Moved by Anderson/Jacobs to adjourn. Motion carried unanimously. Council Meeting adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
