Calliope - Akin Homestead

JESSE AKIN HOMESTEAD: Jesse Akin settled in the Big Sioux River Valley 1 mile west of Calliope in June 1878. He lived in a haystack for a few months until he could build a small cabin to house his family. We moved this building from the Akin farm to represent life for homesteaders on the prairie. Note the bricks and plaster used to insulate the frame construction. A loft supplemented the two rooms.
